Construction Training & Work-Study Program
In partnership with ABC of Iowa, we offer basic construction classes for all students. These classes, taught by Teen Challenge staff who are IACT certified, include:
- Construction Safety
- Construction Math
- Power & Hand Tools
- Basic Rigging
- Blueprints
Once
students have successfully completed this
seven-week course, they receive a diploma from
The National Center for Construction Education and Research. NCCER
is a not-for-profit education foundation which
develops and publishes standardized
construction, maintenance
and pipeline curricula, safety programs,
management education, industry-image materials
and craft skills assessments.
Through our Construction Work-Study
Program, students receive hands-on experience
in building demolition, concrete, masonry,
framing, plumbing, electrical, and other areas
of general construction. Under the supervision
of our Work-Stu dy
Coordinator, students help renovate Teen
Challenge facilities, as well as distressed
residential properties in area communities.
These properties are then sold, generating
on-going funding for the program, a beautiful
new residence for the buyer, and improving the
community.

GED & Reading Enhancement
Teen
Challenge of the Midlands wants to ensure that
as students progress through the program,
they're equipped to enter the job market and
achieve future educational goals. For this
reason, students entering Teen Challenge
without a GED or high school diploma are
required to work through GED class at their
own pace.
The GED program is a partnership between Teen Challenge of the Midlands and Des Moines Area Community College. Weekly classes are held at the Newton DMACC campus. Students are required to pay a testing fee, which is reimbursed upon successful completion of the GED test.

We also offer Reading Enhancement classes to
help students strengthen themselves
academically whether or not they already
possess a diploma. All men are screened during
the application/induction process, and receive
literacy instruction based on their personal
needs.
